Gnathian oenochoe

Apulia, southern Italy, ca. 300 BCE

Site: Necropolis on Vis Island in Dalmatia.

Terracotta-coloured ceramic clay. Gnathian-style oenochoe (ewer) with a trefoil mouth and high handle terminating in a zoomorphic head. The elegant narrow body features vertical fluting. Painted with white, red, and yellow slip on the neck and belly – an ivy branch and ribbon, birds facing each other, and a wreath with rosettes. Partially eroded layers of decoration.
